Most guests come to Beckham Creek for the cave and the Buffalo River. But the region around the lodge is one of the most culturally rich corners of Arkansas — frontier history, Ozark folk music traditions, underground caverns, free-roaming elk herds, and scenic drives that take half a day and make you wonder why you ever moved to a city. Their site keeps a running pulse on Jasper-area venues, seasonal events, and small-town gatherings — a quick stop before your visit often turns up shows and pop-ups you wouldn't find anywhere else.

Visit Arkansas, the state's official tourism site, casts a wider net across the Natural State. From Ozark folk festivals and roadhouse blues nights to scenic byways and dark-sky destinations, it's a useful companion for guests extending their trip beyond Newton County or hunting down a specific kind of evening out.

BOXLEY VALLEY & THE ELK HERD

Scenic drive · 20 minutes from the lodge · best at dawn and dusk.

Arkansas's largest free-roaming elk herd grazes through Boxley Valley year-round. Drive Highway 43 south at sunrise or just before sunset and you'll see them — sometimes thirty or forty at a time, often within feet of the road. Bring binoculars. Bring patience. Don't bring a drone.

MYSTIC CAVERNS

Show cave · 45 minutes · open daily, guided tours.

If staying inside a cave makes you want to see another one, Mystic Caverns is the answer. Two separate cave systems with guided walking tours — Mystic Caverns and the Crystal Dome — packed with stalactites, soda straws, and the kind of room sizes that make kids go quiet.

OZARK FOLK CTR STATE PARK

Folk culture park · 90 minutes · Mountain View, AR · April–November.

Living-history demonstrations of Ozark crafts — blacksmithing, basket weaving, soap making, instrument building — plus the folk-music museum and a craft village where pieces are made by the demonstrators themselves. Pair a daytime visit here with an evening show at the Folk Center theater.

BUFFLAO NATIONAL RIVER

Scenic + historic · 15 minutes · accessible year-round.

Where the Buffalo begins. Less famous than the lower stretches, less crowded, and just as beautiful. Stop at Lost Valley for the half-mile hike to Eden Falls, or drive the headwaters loop for bluff overlooks no GPS will recommend.

EUREKA SPRINGS HISTORIC DST

Victorian mountain town · 90 minutes · day trip

A nineteenth-century spa town built into the side of a mountain — every street is on a slope, every building is on the National Register. Shops, galleries, the Great Passion Play, and some of the best restaurants in the state. Park once and walk; the streets are not built for cars.

JASPER ARKANSAS

Newton County seat · 25 minutes · stop on your way in or out.

The closest full-service town. Worth a half-day for the Newton County Courthouse, the Cliff House Inn overlook of the Arkansas Grand Canyon, and the few local shops on the square. Also: gas, groceries, and the last reliable cell signal before the lodge.

TIPS AND TRICKS

SCENIC DRIVES

Three loops worth the gas.

Pig Trail Scenic Byway

Highway 23 from Ozark to Brashears. Tight switchbacks, hardwood ridge runs, motorcyclists every weekend. About two hours start to finish.

Push Mountain Road

From Big Flat to Norfork. Less famous than the Pig Trail, less traffic, and arguably more beautiful. Allow an hour and a half.

Highway 7 South

Arkansas's most decorated scenic route. Drive south from Jasper through Boxley Valley toward Russellville, then loop back. Plan a full half-day with stops.

HISTORY YOU CAN STAND IN . . .

The frontier still shows here.

The Beckham Cave region was Jesse James country in the late 1800s — the lodge property itself has its own outlaw lore.

Beyond that, the courthouse in Jasper, the abandoned mining sites along Highway 7, and the pioneer cemeteries along the Buffalo all carry the same story: hardscrabble settlers, Confederate-era conflict, and the slow conversion of frontier into national park.

A regional history book is in the lodge living room; take a flip through.

TIPS FROM THE LOCALS

How to do it right.

Confirm dates with the venue before you commit. Small-town schedules shift.
Folk Center evenings are general admission. Arrive 30 minutes early for the front benches.
If you hear a porch jam in Mountain View, or anywhere, you're allowed to stop and listen. People expect it.
Bring cash — some smaller venues and festivals still take cash only.
For Boxley Valley elk: drive slow, stay in the car, never approach. If you see a lot of cars parked beside the road, look closely, they're elk watching.
Eureka Springs streets are tight and steep. Park once on arrival, walk everywhere.
